Instagram SEO for Small Business Owners

Instagram has become a powerful social media platform for individuals and businesses – big and small – to engage with their audience, showcase their brand and add to their SEO. With over one billion active users, it’s crucial to understand how to navigate the world of Instagram effectively – especially if you’ve been out of the loop for a while.

In this blog post, we will cover the basics of Instagram, getting started on the platform, optimising your posts for better visibility and Instagram SEO, and a PDF freebie to enhance your Instagram strategy with 50 Content Prompts for Small Business.

Getting Started on Instagram

If you’re new to Instagram, the first step is to create a compelling profile with your branding that reflects your brand identity, values, and uses the new features of Instagram too.

Use a clear logo that is consistent across your platforms for business use, and use super concise language for your bio – replace the word ‘and’ with ‘&’, ensure your unique business offer is there with your best link first (directly to website specials or main offer, or to your website’s links page).

TIP: Using Linktree or Linkinbio.com? Consider creating your own Links page on your website and direct your audience there instead of other platforms outside of your control.

Once your profile is set up, it’s time to start posting content that resonates with your target audience to your stories, main grid, and using a variety of post types.

Instagram post types include: static posts (1 image), carousels (multiple images/videos), or reel (shortform video).

To kickstart your Instagram journey, take inspiration from your Instagram settings which will offer templates and get used to posting on the platform.

Working on your social media strategy to plan how your content can work towards delivering your marketing and business goals IS essential – but you also need to practice the platform if you’re going to be DIYing your content and business social media.

Analyse trending posts and reels and consider: what makes these posts engaging, high quality in visuals and writing, and where are the calls-to-action being implemented? E.g. click my links, buy my stuff, follow for more etc. These are ACTION words instructing you to do something. Now you’ll notice them everywhere.

And now you are able to analyse content and posts, let’s optimise what is currently posted on your business socials and what is (and isn’t) working for Instagram SEO.

How to Optimise your Current Posts & Reels for Instagram SEO

Optimising your existing Instagram posts and reels is essential to ensure maximum visibility and engagement, and minor tweaking of keywords for Instagram SEO. See, social media content is also searchable, within their apps and appearing in Search Engine Results Pages (a.k.a. SERPs).

So optimising the keywords and written content on your social media adds to your SEO as well!

Search engines LOVE helpful, useful content like these blog posts, and social media posts that people have saved, shared and engaged with. And everyone loves beautiful content – so unfortunately, blurry video and images, and hard to hear audio isn’t going to be very helpful or engaging for your audience.

Check through your last few Instagram posts and consider:

  • Is this clear and quality work to see, read, and have a call to action? (If not, consider redoing OR what to do better next time)
  • Can you hear audio – and are subtitles added too with the Instagram captions sticker? (or if this sticker fails as it has glitched for us all before, turn on captions in your Instagram settings for all reels)
  • Are there captions with this post/reel that people can read through, and do they include relevant keywords to my business, and this specific topic discussed in this post? (If not, add them in!)
  • Add the hashtags. Just do it. If your account is brand new, using up to 30 hashtags doesn’t hinder you at all. For growing accounts further, it can be an invisible annoyance visually to your audience, so you can reduce to under 30 for the aesthetics. Instagram will use it like categories in the library; it’s helpful for people searching in-app those who are exploring that exact hashtag.

Successful reels and trends will change over time – they are fun to create, but you do not have to do them everyday, every week either if they don’t match your aims for your business social media.

I’ve used trending audio to create fun reels around my niche, like this one for example:

Incorporate these insights into your own content strategy to improve the performance of your posts, and actually CHECK your numbers, engagement and click throughs to your links in your dashboard on Instagram. See how your content performs over time, and if something’s working really well for engagement AND your business aims – consider doing more of that. That’s a simple way to understand part of your social strategy for improving over time for your business aims.
